Sonographic Manifestations of the Unusual Fatty Liver

Abstract

|
Hepatic fatty infiltration appears as an area of increased echogenicity sonographically.
When focal areas of fat are present in otherwise normal liver parenchyma, it may be mass-like in appearance, leading to further evaluation.
We experienced 27 cases of unusual fatty liver, which showed variable sonographic manifestations during 2 years from Mar. 1985 to Feb. 1987.
1. 19 of 27 cases revealed focal fatty infiltration (8 lobar type, 7 subsegmental type and 4 localized types), which appeared as areas of focal bright echogenicity in contrast to less echogenic normal parenchyme.
2. In 8 of 27 cases, the focal area of normal liver. parenchyme seemed to be hypoechoic (pseudotumor) due to relative hyperechogenicity of the liver from fatty infiltration. Most of them were located in the medial segment of the left lobe (quadrate lobe).
